Hi there, i know there is a thread similar to this currently open but the problem is slightly different...

I can play most games on the pc without it overheating at all but whenever i play GW it overheats like crazy and gets up to temperatures bordering 90 degrees...

Is there any reason for this? And what can i do about it?

Are you using a laptop? the problem could be dust.

No im using a desktop pc: Here is the spec:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 x 2 5200
GPU: Nvidia Geforce 8800GT
RAM: 2gb DDR 2
Mobo: ASUS M2N-E SLI

I have the defautl cooler on the processor that comes with the cpu and 2 case fans: the one on the power supply and the one in the back of the pc... i have blown the dust out of everything however the temperatures still reach 80 degrees +

Take the case off and turn on the computer. Be sure all fans are running. Also if you see dust clean it off, after unplugging and computer. Be sure the vents on the case are free from dust, cpu, power supply, video card fans also. Also check that there isn't a lot of cables etc blocking airflow.
BTW is 90 degrees F or C? If its F then don't worry your temperature is low. If its C then I wouldn't run it until its fixed, that's HOT!

Heh, it's C yeah i know 90 is very high... but i decided to take the side off of my pc and it's running much cooler... is it ok to leave the side off?

Yeah what Fusa asked; you talking C or F? Also make sure you are truly over-heating and give your CPU heatsink a nice touch. If it scorches your finger than yes you're running hot. You should see temps around 25-30*C. Also AMD has been known to have different temps on cores. For instance my old 2.2 64bit ran @ 60*C normal running temp and that was factory spec. However I looked up your CPU and you shouldn't see higher than 30C.

Those are some temperatures out of the temp log for core temp which i use to monitor my temperature and it is measured in degrees C so yeah it's pretty HOT! On the left is core #0 and on the right is core #1

Make sure your CPU heatsink is properly attached/working.

Have you actually touches the heatsink? Could be that sensors are outputting wrong data.

ok i just felt both the GPU and the CPU heatsinks... the CPU one is fine... the GPU one however is VERY hot!

Be sure the fan is running on the video card. If theres a card right next to the video card move it over a slot if you can. Running your system without a case depends on if you have pets etc that can into it. But if its running cooler with the case off you probably have an air flow problem or case fan not working. I did have a mb burn out once when I cricket entered the case when I didn't cover the slot when I removed a pci card, but also ran an old 386 for years with no case without any problems.

Checked that... i just did some research and found a program called rivatuner where i can increase and decrease GPU speeds... would decreasing the GPU speed help with temps at all?

It might help, but need to find out whats causing the problem, else you'll end up with a dead video card, and maybe other dead parts. Heat is one of the biggest killer of computer components. If the card is still under warranty see if you can get a replacement.

Well i turned my fan speed up quite a bit and core temp is seeing core 0 at around the 40-55 mark and core 1 at 40-50 is this safe?

yeah anything less than 55C is fine for CPU temp

Off-hand, I say that the graphics settings in GW are higher than they are in your other games. Try going to the graphics settings (in GW) and turning them down a notch - particularly, if Anti-Aliasing (AA) is set 4x, set it back to 2x.

90c?! Wow isn't that like -9 from Water boils? I use the X2 myself with gf 9600 GT and the temp is never above 50c. Time for a new cooling system, me think.

Consider the highest recorded surface temperature on Earth is 58c.

Since im not too good with what's inside my pc... well i have my GPU and then coming from it is a wire which is connected to something that is labelled as a heatsink... is that the thing i should look to replace? or is it something on the actual card?
